Background: Cultural humility is essential in fostering connections between healthcare providers and patients from diverse backgrounds. While it emphasizes awareness of power imbalances, it often lacks focus on the nuances within cultural groups. This study introduces “cultural specificity,” which builds on cultural humility by highlighting the importance of understanding specific cultural contexts and interactions (Krishnan, 2023). Previous workshops have shown promise in enhancing medical students’ comfort with providing culturally competent care, particularly for underrepresented groups such as the South Asian diaspora. Given the diversity at NYU Langone Long Island, further training in cultural specificity is needed to improve provider-patient relationships. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational workshop on cultural humility and specificity for house staff at NYU Langone Long Island. The primary objective is to assess whether participation enhances understanding of cultural humility in medical practice. A secondary goal is to increase healthcare providers’ comfort in caring for members of underrepresented groups. Specific workshop objectives include raising awareness of cultural nuances among various groups, fostering cultural humility, and examining the impact of implicit bias. Design/Methods: We will conduct a single-center survey study with a 60-minute interactive workshop. Participants will complete a pre-workshop survey to gauge their baseline knowledge and comfort levels of cultural humility. The workshop will include a didactic introduction to cultural humility, followed by small group discussions of interactive cases. Afterward, participants will complete a follow-up survey assessing their satisfaction and any changes in knowledge and comfort regarding cultural humility and care for diverse populations. Comparing pre- and post-workshop survey results will help evaluate the workshop's effectiveness.
