Background: SCA is a major cause of non-accidental death among student athletes in the NCAA. Time is a crucial factor with SCA, with survival rates decreasing by 13% each minute that CPR is not administered. There are no previous studies evaluating the preparedness of college students - specifically NCAA athletes - in the event they witness a SCA. Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate UCLA undergraduate student knowledge of Sudden Cardiac Arrest/Death (SCA/SCD), CPR, and AED locations. Determining the SCA preparedness among UCLA students and the willingness to become CPR certified will inform future preventative measures. With high rates of SCA in athletes, we hypothesize that athletes will be more likely to have witnessed SCA and be more willing to become certified. Confirming this hypothesis will support our proposal to implement a CPR certification requirement within the NCAA. Their certification and preparedness will contribute to many communities throughout their life. Design/Methods: All enrolled UCLA undergraduate students are eligible to participate, provided they are 18+ years old. Students will use their UCLA logon to access the Qualtrics survey, preventing bot and duplicate responses. No identifiable data is being collected and there is no more than minimal risk as defined by UCLA IRB. Access to raw data will be limited to those investigators listed on the IRB application. This is a systematic investigation to collect quantitative data about the UCLA undergraduate population. Descriptive statistics, including, percentages, and frequencies will be provided. The start of the survey will inform participants that their participation is both voluntary and by continuing with the survey they are consenting to the study. Participants will provide information about their year of graduation, their school of study, syncope events, CPR certification, AED locations, and their willingness to become certified (if not currently certified). We expect data collection to complete before 2025.
