Workshop Description: The Society for Pediatric Sedation (SPS) Provider Course is a hands-on, simulation-based workshop that utilizes team-based learning principles, led by transdisciplinary experts in the field.
This five-hour session provides learners a comprehensive overview of pediatric procedural sedation, including pharmacology of analgesic and sedative agents, required patient monitoring, recognition and management of sedation-related adverse events, and crisis management through simulation-based scenarios as well as case-based discussions.
The Society for Pediatric Sedation Provider CourseTM includes an online module package that prepares the learner for participation in the SIM-based live course. The comprehensive learning system facilitates asynchronous learning and is comprised of a syllabus updated in 2019, five interactive case-based modules as well as a pre- and post-test for assessment. Completion of the entire learning package qualifies the student for 3.5 CME/CE credits.
The goals and objectives of this learning activity are:
1. Perform a pre-sedation risk assessment effectively;
2. Describe the effects of sedation on pediatric airway tone and respiratory physiology;
3. Explain the principles of and interpret the information from pulse oximetry and capnography monitoring;
4. Diagnose and manage adverse airway and cardiopulmonary events during sedation;
5. Demonstrate knowledge of the pharmacology and uses of common sedative/analgesic drugs;
6. Describe effective teamwork dynamics and communications skills required by pediatric sedation teams;
7. Develop a systematic and rational approach to pediatric sedation.
