Session Goal: We will use a panel discussion of content experts to showcase and share effective approaches for pediatric obesity care in pediatric primary care settings.
Summary: While current guidelines emphasize early referral of children with obesity to multi-disciplinary intensive health behavior lifestyle interventions, the paucity of such interventions means that most children with obesity will be managed in primary care. Therefore, it is critical to equip primary care clinicians and health systems with evidence-based tools to identify and manage children with obesity in the primary care setting and to connect them with community resources to address obesity related social determinants of health. In this interactive session, we will hear from clinicians and researchers with expertise in: primary care based obesity treatment, health systems approaches to obesity management, and clinic to community connections to address obesity related social determinants of health (i.e. food insecurity). After formal presentations, the SIG chairs will facilitate a Q and A session and also solicit participants to share their own experiences and approaches to obesity management in primary care.
