Simulation training offers a risk-free environment for novice and seasoned clinicians to achieve and maintain competency. Simulation based medical education is a form of experiential learning and offers the unique opportunity for learning through active experimentation and reflection. Through a simulated event, a learner can engage in an experience prior to their performance in the actual clinical environment. In the learning cycle of simulation, the debriefing portion allows for reflection and analysis to identify gaps in knowledge, individual and team performance. Post simulation debriefing is often thought to be the most formative and crucial portion of the learning experience in SBME. For this workshop, we will focus on how to facilitate the debriefing process.
In this interactive workshop, we will explore different models for debriefing and apply these skills into practice. We will review essential elements of debriefing and describe common debriefing techniques. Facilitators will provide pre-recorded simulation scenarios using video playback, which we will use to discuss and apply debriefing techniques. Finally, we will discuss application of debriefing scenarios to our real-life clinical scenarios through the concept of “hot” and “cold” debriefs.
