The Nutrition and Food is Medicine SIG brings together pediatricians and healthcare professionals to share evidence-based research, education, and clinical practice experience that supports integration of nutrition interventions into healthcare.
This session will provide an update on the Food is Medicine landscape in the United States and focus attention to two rapidly developing areas in the field: improving nutrition curriculum in graduate medical education and identifying sustainable funding and reimbursement models for Food is Medicine interventions. Doctor Ileana Vargas, pediatric endocrinologist and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Columbia University will review proposals to improve integration of nutrition competencies in Graduate medical education and discuss her current work to enhance nutrition education for trainees. Participants will review and discuss practical implications, opportunities, and barriers to integrating current recommendations into the academic community. Next, we will be joined by a panel of FiM practitioners to learn practical tips on how Food is Medicine is being implemented in private/academic and community-based settings. Dr. Michelle Loy, MD, DipABOIM, DipABLM, DABMA, FAAP, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics from Weill Cornell Medical College will facilitate the panel discussion and discussants are pending based on PAS abstract reviews. Finally, participants will break out into groups to further discuss practical implementation of nutrition education in Graduate medical education or billing and coding within their practice communities.
