The NEC Club will address the exceptional nutritional needs of infants at risk of and diagnosed with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Led by the NEC Society, the world’s leading nonprofit dedicated to advancing NEC research, education, and advocacy, the NEC Club will confront urgent challenges and opportunities to optimize NEC prevention, treatment, and recovery through human milk nutrition. The NEC Club will be moderated by NEC Society’s Scientific Advisor, Ravi Patel, MD, MSc, Professor of Pediatrics, Emory University, with presentations from Jennifer Canvasser, MSW, founder and executive director, NEC Society, Misty Good, MD, MS Neonatology Division Chief, UNC-Chapel Hill, Rebecca Hoban, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Seattle Children’s Division of Neonatology, Shetal Shah, MD, Professor of Pediatrics, New York Medical College, and Jonathan Fanaroff, MD, JD. Professor of Pediatrics, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
The NEC Club presents 1) Partnering with Patient-Families to Prevent NEC by Jennifer Canvasser; 2) Advocacy Efforts for Equitable Access to Donor Milk by Shetal Shah; 3) Pathobiology of NEC: Nutritional Strategies for NEC Prevention by Misty Good; 4) Human Milk as Medicine: Stem Cells, Growth Factors, and More for the Gut-Brain Axis by Rebecca Hoban; 5) NEC: Ethical and Legal Considerations by Jonathan Fanaroff.
The nutritional needs of infants at risk of NEC are highly complex, and there is mounting pressure to optimize how premature infants are fed.
