Workshop Description: Since 2022, a record-number of immigrants including refugees and asylum-seekers have entered the United States. Within this newly immigrated population, an estimated 50% are children. Often, these children experience unique trauma in their home countries that is followed by distressing journeys including unaccompanied travel, family separation at the border, and loss of cultural identity. As this growing population is seen for acute and chronic healthcare needs in inpatient and outpatient settings across the country, an increasing number of us have cared for the physical and emotional trauma experienced by our patients. With this historical context and the continued displacement of children worldwide, it is prudent and timely to provide our colleagues with a comprehensive approach to navigate the complex provision of strength-based, culturally-appropriate, trauma-responsive care to these children. Using evidence-based strategies referencing existing literature, and our own, often daily, experiences, participants will leave having used patient cases to discuss and reflect on trauma-responsive care strategies. This workshop will empower participants to then take this shared knowledge back to their home institutions, equipping them with tools to implement learned strategies to improve resilience and health outcomes for newly arrived immigrant children.
