Workshop Description: You’ve done the research, crafted the curriculum, and mastered the material, but it doesn’t do much good if you can’t capture people’s attention and communicate effectively. Whether you’re designing an academic poster, a recruitment flyer, or an infographic for social media, graphic design can make the difference between failure and fantastic. In this interactive workshop, we will review key principles of graphic design and use them to turn dense text into eye-catching visuals that clearly communicate the main message.
The goal of this workshop is to prepare participants to turn raw content (e.g. abstracts/outlines) into polished visual communication in the form of posters, flyers, or social media posts. We will practice shifting from topical titles to declarative headlines and using figures to communicate key facts. Working in small groups, participants will compete at taking a sample abstract, identifying key points, and expressing them with a catchy title and figure. We will review and practice using principles of visual hierarchy to influence how viewers’ eyes track through a set of text and images. Finally, we will learn how to make media more accessible to broad audiences including color blind, visually impaired, and sensory sensitive viewers. Participants will then divide into groups based on what type of media they’re interested in designing (e.g. poster, social media post, etc.), and those groups will practice drafting a complete visual communication tool.
**Participants are strongly encouraged to bring a laptop so that we will have enough computers for everyone to participate in all practice activities.**
