Workshop Description: Are you curious about qualitative research but it seems daunting? Are you uncertain how to get started? We have a workshop for you! Bring an idea or a question that you would like to explore from a qualitative approach and we will help you build and refine a research question. Or, just come with your curiosity and we will help you embark on discovering diverse questions that are ideally suited to qualitative inquiry. Join our experienced group of facilitators in delving into the nomenclature and methodology of qualitative research. We will work stepwise through a worksheet that will help you work from study idea to study question, considering key factors along the way. Together, let’s consider a possible study population broadly; who might inform the questions that you would like answer? We will help you contemplate and acknowledge what voices you should be certain to include. We will walk with you through the methodologies of grounded theory, phenomenology and ethnography in determining a research approach. You will leave the workshop with a basic understanding of terminology used in qualitative research, a beginning research question, and scaffolding of an approach on which to build your study or to assess someone else’s. This workshop will take an iterative approach so that participants can learn, apply, and refine one component of qualitative research at a time with the ultimate goal of leaving the workshop with a quality research question for qualitative inquiry.
