Workshop Description: Is this your first time applying for a job in academic medicine? Or are you an early-career physician planning to apply for a new role? Then this workshop is for you!
Navigating the job application process can be challenging, especially for trainees with limited experience beyond the Match. This workshop aims to provide insights into job applications and equip participants with tools to develop their career vision and secure roles aligned with their career goals. Attendees will learn effective strategies to showcase their unique experiences to distinguish themselves as candidates. The workshop emphasizes small group mentoring and coaching tailored to career interests.
Facilitators will review the job search timeline and explain academic tracks and full-time equivalent (FTE). Attendees will craft career vision statements and learn how to create compelling CVs, cover letters, and additional materials such as educator/advocacy portfolios or job talks highlighting their vision. Facilitators will also clarify the interview process, guide on questions to ask, and discuss contract negotiation to support career goals. Attendees will receive an extensive, well-received application toolkit including all workshop materials and resources. This session features facilitators with diverse interests and perspectives mentoring trainees in small groups to support their entry into the job market. Facilitators represent a variety of specialties across the country including general pediatrics, hospital medicine, emergency medicine, internal medicine-pediatrics, and neonatology. Their areas of expertise include clinical medicine, medical education, advocacy, leadership, DEI, clinical research, global health, and quality improvement.
