Workshop Description: We propose a workshop to address a paucity of training opportunities in multilingual research methods. We will focus on skills to recruit and engage children and families who speak languages other than English. In the US, approximately 16% of children have at least one parent who speaks English less than “very well” – the standard for safe and complete communication during clinical or research encounters. Among Asian or Latino children, this rises to ~44%. However, research by the proposed faculty and others indicates that families who speak languages other than English are still routinely excluded from pediatric studies. This challenges the accuracy and generalizability of child health research and raises important questions about research justice and who benefits from research.
The workshop will offer participants tools, strategies, and knowledge to design and manage child health research protocols inclusive of languages other than English. It begins with a summary of ethical, scientific, and practical arguments for inclusion. Then it will ground participants in foundational concepts about language and culture. Then, it will describe different translation protocols, as translation is often a key financial, pragmatic, and methodological challenge. Finally, participants will break into small groups for facilitated, hands-on activities to practice selecting and applying a translation strategy, budget for language-related resources, and adjust a study timeline to include language-related study activities. We then reconvene as a larger group for an interactive discussion. The workshop will promote dialogue, allowing for attendees to network, explore, and collectively problem solve common challenges in multilingual research.
