Workshop Description: Anti-racist research aims to counter the legacy of scientific racism, which undermines the validity of scientific findings, and is relevant to everyone who conducts research related to humans. Members of our team conducted a systematic review of guidance on anti-racist research practices at each step of the research process. Then, a modified Delphi panel of 14 national experts reached consensus on critical elements of anti-racist research practices. In this workshop, facilitators will present these findings and assist attendees in workshopping: 1) a research question of interest or 2) a provided example research study idea.
Specifically, we will:
1. Define anti-racist research.
2. Present expert guidance on performing anti-racist research, focusing on initial stages of project design and study team development.
3. Ask participants to bring a nascent research project to discuss (or discuss example topics).
4. Guide participants in working through a structured worksheet, applying the first steps of anti-racist practices to their proposed project (e.g., research team formation, team culture, partnerships, and education; discussing concrete steps to find and build relationships with community partners). Participants will share their discussions in moderated breakout groups.
5. Present the importance of theoretical frameworks and share example frameworks that researchers may use to design their study.
6. In small groups, participants will discuss and share how to select and apply a relevant theoretical framework to their projects.
7. Participants will commit to action steps to make their own projects more anti-racist via electronic surveys; we will send automated commitment reminders 3 months later.
