Workshop Description: Pediatric health care presents many opportunities for improvement, from serious patient safety events to widespread health disparities. Consequently, pediatricians increasingly focus on quality improvement (QI). However, most improvements remain unpublished, leading to missed learning opportunities, repeated mistakes, and insufficient academic credit for those who strive to enhance care.
In this highly interactive workshop, participants will critically assess the SQUIRE 2.0 guidelines for QI publications, emphasizing essential elements for effective QI writing: rationale and context. A strong rationale explains the theoretical basis for interventions and serves as a cohesive theme for the manuscript, while context helps readers evaluate the generalizability of a QI initiative.
Through numerous examples and group discussions, we will underscore the importance of disseminating QI initiatives in the literature, while also illustrating the risks associated with QI efforts that lack rigor and structure. Participants will take part in a "Write-Pair-Share" exercise focused on their own QI projects or a provided example, allowing them to apply what they've learned and receive immediate feedback to improve their writing skills. The workshop will conclude with a discussion and Q&A session led by editors and editorial board members from Pediatrics, Hospital Pediatrics, and Pediatric Quality and Safety.
