Workshop Description: Academic clinical investigators balance multiple missions in order to perform clinical research that will drive advances in pediatric outcomes and care. While the ability to shift cognitive focus between missions can foster physician resilience, supportive systems and environments are necessary for research success. Our workshop will focus on two key aspects of building research capacity and creating foundations for success: identifying core individual research needs and advocating for infrastructure that promotes a research-positive environment.
Progression in research careers requires strategic negotiation along with planning to navigate the required technical expertise and the complex administrative landscape associated with high-caliber scholarly work. Insights and strategies to access resources needed for success are crucial, whether considering one's first post-fellowship position or as an established clinician investigator. Leaders need to provide effective infrastructure to support investigator-initiated research, anticipating and fostering strong teams, in order to maximize the time spent by each research team member.
Attendees will develop approaches that go beyond “protected time” and “money”. Specific strategies will be identified. Topics will be considered from diverse perspectives and career stages. The target audience includes investigators trying to carve out research in settings with significant clinical loads, to leaders working to develop robust departmental research portfolios, in environments that are often focused on clinical productivity. Resources including data extraction and management, support for scientific writing, and regulatory support will be considered. Those working to build creative strategies to foster resilience through advancing and enabling multiple academic missions will find this an invigorating program.
