Pediatricians have unique experience and expertise to further the growing movement to improve child health and development during the “First 1,000 Days,” the time of greatest growth and opportunity in a child’s life. The purpose of this action-oriented SIG is to unite pediatricians to collaborate across sectors to develop, implement, and evaluate research approaches, system innovations, and policies that strengthen the First 1,000 Days for children and families.
To date, we have focused on three areas: 1) Pediatrics integration into early childhood systems, 2) Payment reform and alternate payment models, 3) Integration and sharing of data across sectors.
This year’s SIG will focus on data-driven approaches to strengthen the First 1,000 Days for children born preterm, approximately 10% of US births annually. This population has a high prevalence of medical needs and of experiencing structural inequities such as poverty and racism and lessons learned may inform programs to support other groups of medically and socially vulnerable children. Dr. Jonathan Litt will outline a framework for creating early childhood systems of care for preterm infants. He will identify gaps in current approaches and present examples of successful, data-driven interventions that support health, participation, function, and thriving. He will emphasize the important role of interdisciplinary and cross-systems data collection and dissemination for achieving optimal outcomes.
As reflected in the agenda, our SIG is committed to disseminating member projects, engaging junior faculty, facilitating cross-disciplinary collaboration and mentorship, and being a trusted expert and advocate for programs and policies that improve child wellbeing.
